In 2005 the Australian Federal government announced its plan to
build a radioactive waste dump in the Northern Territory on one of 3
department of defence sites. In 2006 a fourth site at Muckaty station
was added to the list of sites proposed for assessment. Opposition to
the proposal is widespread.
